Why Psychotherapy with a Human – and Not with ChatGPT, Claude, Grok or similar tools?

Digital tools such as ChatGPT can provide valuable support: they explain complex content, offer exercises, help sort thoughts, and can provide short-term assistance. Some of my clients already use AI as a supplement – and benefit from it.

However, AI cannot replace the central active ingredient of psychotherapeutic change: the human relationship.

Psychotherapy is a Relationship-Oriented Process

People are shaped by relationships – and often hurt by them too. That is why healing also occurs in relationship, not in information.

The therapeutic relationship works through:

  • Resonance
  • Safety
  • Co-Regulation
  • Empathy
  • nonverbal Signalling
  • shared emotional experiences

This level exists between two human beings – not between a person and a LLM.

AI understands language – but not the person behind it

ChatGPT recognises patterns, not emotions. It has no perception, no nervous system, no relational experience.

It sees your text — but not:

  • your tension,
  • your gaze,
  • your silence,
  • your micro-reactions,
  • your avoidance behaviour.

Therapy works precisely there.

Crises Require Responsibility

Professional Diagnostics is Human Judgement

AI cannot make clinically responsible diagnoses.

Therapists work for years under supervision, within legal frameworks, and with accumulated experience. AI is not a health profession.

In crises what counts is:

  • Presence
  • Experience
  • Safety
  • Capacity to Act

AI cannot take on responsibility.

What AI Can — and Cannot — Do

ACT, schema therapy, emotion-focused CBT, hypnosystemic elements: all of this comes alive through how a human being applies it with you. An exercise is a tool. The therapeutic process is a shared space.

Therapeutic Methods Without Relationship Are Just Tools

AI can:

  • Psychoeducation
  • Structure
  • Exercises
  • Questions for Reflexion
  • Process support in preparation

AI Cannot:

  • Trauma sensitivity
  • Attachment dynamics
  • Recognise implicit patterns
  • Manage crises
  • Work with transference
  • Offer genuine relationship

Because ChatGPT doesn’t raise an eyebrow when you say something important.
Because it doesn’t notice when you turn away.
Because it doesn’t pause when you’re struggling.
Because it doesn’t say: "Let’s stay here a moment."
Because it doesn’t sense when you’re going too fast.
Because it doesn’t cheer when you have a breakthrough.
Because it doesn’t get goosebumps.
Because it has no idea how loud your silence is.
And honestly: if you cry with ChatGPT, all it says is:
"As an AI model, I cannot perceive emotions."
